The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is an internationally recognised Award for young people aged 14-25, Dukes introduces young people to a range of opportunities to gain new skills, have new experiences and make a difference to their community and the world. It is about challenge, adventure and achievement.

Aims and Purposes

In Queensland, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a program supported by the Queensland Government, supported by The Department of Communities and is available to every young Queenslander between 14 and 25 years.

Main Activities

The Award is a great way for young people to try new things, hang out with friends, get active and improve their fitness, help out the community, gain confidence, build on life skills, make a difference, challenge themselves and be recognised. It is a flexible program that can complement and/or enhance an organisation's existing program and incorporate an organisation's existing activities.

The program is based on the Ten Essential Philosophies of:

1.   Non-competitive

2.   Available to all

3.   Value - process not a prize

4.   Flexibility

5.   Balance

6.   Progression

7.   Focus on achievement

8.   Marathon not a sprint

9.   Voluntary

10. Enjoyment

The Award presents an exciting program of non-competitive personal challenge and achievement. Participantion is entirely voluntary. Participants set their own goals, choose their own activities and work at their own pace.

There are 3 levels of The Award - Bronze, Silver and Gold. For each level of The Award, participants complete requirements in each of the four sections - Service, Adventurous Journey, Skills, Physical Recreation. At the Gold level there is an additional section called the residential project..

The Award became a recognised course of study for the Queensland Certificate of Education in 2007 providing an additional benefit for participants. Those achieving their Award can also gain credit points for their QCE - 1 point for Bronze, 1 for Silver and 2 for Gold. .

A Complementary Award Program in Queensland, The Bridge Award - is based on the same principles and structure of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Bridge Award provides young people between the ages of 11.5 and 14, or for those who may for some reason not be able to participate in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, with an opportunity to engage in positive youth development activities.
