Establishment of Guides
The Girl Guide Association was established in
Queensland in 1920, with all states combining to form the Australian
Association in 1926. In 1997, the name was changed to Guides Queensland.
Guide Membership in Queensland
8,200 members in Queensland. There are 9 million girls, young women and
women members in 134 countries throughout the world.
Aims and Purposes
The Guide program, which values the unique learning styles of girls and
young women, develops the ability, potential and aptitude of each member
and provides opportunities for personal development and achievement.
Through the guidance of dedicated volunteer leaders, the girls learn
valuable life skills, fulfil personal challenges, learn to care for the
environment and offer community service.
Membership is voluntary, open to girls and
women without discrimination provided they are prepared to make the Guide
Promise.
Main Activities
The Program
includes activities such as abseiling and camping, survival skills,
cooking, music, art, drama, craft, community service and develops
interests ranging from collecting to map reading, athletics to horse
riding. Guiding provides opportunities to enhance practical survival
skills, self awareness,
physical development and relationships with
others.
